How to Prep for Boston Calling

What are your plans for Memorial Day Weekend? Visiting the Cape? Hiking Mount Washington? Cheering for the Red Sox at Fenway? Exploring the new Matisse exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts?

How about singing along to Solange and Mumford and Sons at this years’ Boston Calling Music Festival? That’s what I’ll be doing, soaking up the pre-summer sun while enjoying music and comedy from a variety acts like Chance the Rapper, Cage the Elephant, Hannibal Buress, Mitski, Mac Demarco, and Boston-local Cousin Stizz. And what better way to enjoy live music and local food than with this summer’s must-have drink: Angry Orchard’s Easy Apple. Keep reading to discover what We're most excited about at Boston Calling, our pre-festival rituals, what we're packing, and why we're loving Easy Apple

Get Pumped Up by Making a Playlist

Unless you’re a fan of every act at Boston Calling, you’ll need to expand your horizons to get the full festival experience. Create a playlist with bands you’re unfamiliar with, groups you’re excited to see, and personal jams to listen to while you ride the T to work or jog along the Charles. This playlist will become your primer for the weekend ahead.

Check the Weather, and Match Outfits Accordingly

Pictures are worth a thousand words, so you’re going to want to plan your outfits ahead. The weather will probably be the biggest determinate in piecing together your look. The forecast is predicting a rainy weekend, so it might not be the time or place to break our your brand new white sneakers. Be sure whatever you choose, you’re comfortable and group-selfie ready.

Pick Your Stages

It’s virtually impossible to catch every show, so you’ll need to make a plan. Decide your must-see artists and map those out - there's no way I'm missing Chance the Rapper - and whatever time you have leftover, check out the bands you like from your playlist, sample some of the food, or just chill and take in the scenery with an Easy Apple.

Pregame with Easy Apple

Boston Calling is urging attendees to take public transit, which is great for so many different reasons. Not having to park saves you time and money while also granting you the opportunity to have some fun beforehand. With Friday’s music starting mid-afternoon, We know we’ll be hanging with friends and enjoying an Angry Orchard Easy Apple hard cider. With its fresh apple taste, Easy Apple is the perfect drink to enjoy the music to. It’s balanced flavor profile and refreshingly dry finish makes for easy-drinking – not to mention, it’s a bit less sweet so it won’t weigh you down from band to band.  Crafted with a blend of culinary and bittersweet apples (yes, did you know there were such a thing as bittersweet apples?!)

Pack Your (clear) Bag

Festivals are all day long affairs, beginning around noon and lasting well into the night. One of the easiest ways to ruin you or your friend’s experience is to overlook the essentials. While it’s best to pack light - you’ll be hauling the bag around all day - you need to be prepared.

Boston Calling is not allowing backpacks inside the festival, so you’ll have to get crafty when it comes to packing. The festival is allowing clear plastic bags, but if those aren’t your thing, your pockets will have to do. Because of these restrictions, I’ve tightened my list to include only necessary items.

We never leave the house without our IDs, honestly no one should, but it’s super vital at festivals because you’re going to get thirsty. And what better way to quench your thirst and keep you cool than an ice-cold bottle of Easy Apple? Seriously, this stuff is the best because it’s not-too-sweet yet still keeps that fresh apple taste.

New England weather is super unpredictable, so it’s a safe bet to bring a pair of sunnies and some sunscreen. Sunglasses prevent the signs of aging, protect your eyes from harmful UVs, and at the least can be used as a headband to keep hair out of your face while you’re singing along during your favorite band’s encore. Sunscreen, on the other hand, is mandatory regardless of the weather. Your skin needs a protective shield from the pre-summer rays.
