What is ‘Personal Brand’?

You may be thinking: does everyone really need a brand? If so, what does that look like? Unlike a company’s brand—think logo, color scheme, voice, values—your personal brand is how you present yourself and what you portray to your network. By consistently defining who you are and what you can bring to the table, you can set yourself apart from the crowd as you aim for that new job, promotion, or opportunity.

why your personal brand matters

It creates authenticity

People want to deal with real people. When branding yourself, you have the opportunity to play on the qualities that make you unique and present yourself exactly as you are. Being unapologetically you and sharing what you are passionate about are the best things you can do to set yourself apart from your competitors.

It builds trust and credibility

Consumers tend to gravitate toward brands they trust. Whether you’re trying to grow your business or market yourself as a leader, your audience wants to know they can trust you. Especially today, transparency is critical. If you are marketing yourself as an industry expert—maybe you’re a consultant or a freelancer—you can prove your credibility by finetuning your personal brand.

It allows you to control the narrative

Having a personal brand allows you to tell your own story. Unlike employees of a large company who might not have much say over their organization’s “image,” you can create a brand that is rooted in the things that are important to you. And who doesn’t want that kind of control over their story?!
