Latest Obsession: Activated Charcoal Facial Cleansers

What is activated charcoal?

Despite the scary name, activated charcoal is a totally safe and natural ingredient.  Essentially, activated charcoal is just carbon (an abundant natural element) that is heated to increase its adsorptive properties.

You may be more familiar with activated charcoal as the magical filter that makes your Brita work, or what doctors give to people that have ingested a harmful substance. However, charcoal is becoming increasingly common in skincare products.

Why is it good for my skin?

Activated charcoal does an amazing job clearing toxins out of water, digestive tracts, and even skin. It is especially great for people with oily, blemish-prone skin because charcoal works to attract and absorb dirt and excess oil. The coal helps wash away any hard-to-see grime associated with living in a city. Environmental pollutants that aren't effectively cleared away lead to more rapid aging of the skin. Ew. So, as city gals, we may all benefit to adding a bit of activated charcoal into our skincare routines.
