Local Gem: Sumiao Hunan Kitchen

With every restaurant opening, Kendall Square is becoming more and more of a destination for foodies. Now that one of the JUGs lives in Cambridge, we've been checking out some of these delish places so we were thrilled when Sumiao Hunan Kitchen opened in late July, just around the corner from her apartment.

Sumiao Hunan Kitchen is the loving creation of Sumiao Chen – an impassioned female restaurateur and scientist who was born and raised in Xiangtan, a city within China’s Hunan province. Her restaurant is the first Hunanese restaurant concept in the greater Boston area.

Cheers!

Upon walking in the door we were delighted by the bright, colorful atmosphere and chic artistic vibe. What delighted us even more was our first peak at the cocktail menu. As seasoned drinkers, we were pumped to try some truly innovative and unique bevvies - including a few made with daqu - a traditional Chinese liquor we had never tried before.

BITES

The menu is a carefully curated selection of both our Chinese-American favorites and more traditional Hunan dishes. We started with the organic cauliflower, scallion pancakes, and fried rice and then moved onto our mains: General Tso's chicken and the red braised pork. Everything we ordered was FANTASTIC and we can't wait to go back and try everything else we missed. One thing we will definitely be ordering again: the cauliflower...SO.GOOD. Another bonus was the portion size - lunch for tomorrow=covered!
