It’s no surprise that Lucy Foley’s The Guest List has topped the bestseller lists since its release. This modern take on the classic whodunit is absolutely riveting right from the get-go. Goodreads calls it a cross between Agatha Christie and Big Little Lies, which we feel is a spot-on description. There’s plenty to discuss here, so if you’ve already read the novel and you’re ready to chat with friends, we’ve got the perfect set of conversation starters below. Beware: spoilers ahead!

  1. Was it clear from the start that this would be a murder mystery? What were some clues that made the novel fit into that category?

  2. The story includes a lot of build-up — character-building time as folks arrive to the island — before the wedding even begins. How does the author manage to build suspense and keep readers’ attention even while there isn’t much activity going on in the present?

  3. Which characters did you immediately gravitate towards in the beginning?

  4. What were the motivations behind the narrating voices?

  5. When the waitress first screams, what did you first guess was the horror she witnessed?

  6. Why did the author choose to tell the story from the 6 perspectives she did?

  7. Which moment shocked you the most?

  8. In the end, Johnno takes the blame for Will’s murder — is this fair? Do you think he understands who the real culprit may be? Will he reveal them?

  9. Were you satisfied with the ending? If not, what would you have adjusted?
